چکیده

The problem we consider is a practical multiple-period wood procurement planning problem in the Eastern Canadian context. The forest cut blocks are large and heterogeneous; they have different densities and the diameter of the trees varies. This is a difficult forest management problem because it integrates two related problems: the forest bucking problem with a cut-to-length (CTL) bucking system and the multi-facility supply planning problem. The choice of the areas to harvest in each period and how to harvest them affects the assortments provided to the mills. We must decide which areas to harvest in each period so that the demands of the various wood-processing facilities are satisfied. Moreover, we must indicate how to harvest the different cut blocks according to the bucking priority list and the quantity of harvested logs from each block to transport to the sawmill. In this paper, we extend the procurement model presented in Dems et al. [10] to more detailed multiple-period planning. We develop a mixed integer linear model, and we propose two heuristic approaches that quickly generate an initial feasible schedule of cut blocks. Computational results from an Eastern Canadian forestry company are presented.

Effects of different cut-to-length harvesting structures on the economic value of a wood procurement planning problem

In this paper, we develop a Mixed Integer Linear model for a practical multi-facility wood procurement-planning problem using a cut-to-length (CTL) bucking system. This forest management problem is difficult to solve since it integrates the forest bucking problem and the multi-facility supply planning problem. A priority list approach was used to generate adequate bucking patterns for the Easte...

Bucking Decisions Anticipation

We consider a two-echelon timber supply chain in which the first echelon consists of several stands to be harvested and the second echelon consists of mills to be procured with logs of different length. This problem aims at minimizing harvesting and transportation costs for one production period, while satisfying demand expressed as mix of volumes of specific log types. Harvesting cost, which i...

Do Timber Prices Follow a Random Walk or are They Mean-Reverting?

Timber price forecasts are important components of timberland investment analysis. Two techniques are widely used in forecasting. Econometric models use one or more independent variables to predict a dependent variable. Time series analysis or autoregression techniques use the prior observations of a variable, and only those prior observations, to make predictions of that variable. Either techn...

Modeling timber mill procurement influence effects on interstate sawlog exportation

Over the last three decades the exportation rate of raw sawlogs from Illinois to neighboring states for processing has nearly doubled. While the exportation of sawlogs has adverse impacts on the Illinois wood products manufacturing sector and local forest landowners, little research has been conducted to understand how the spatial arrangement of timber mills affects sawlog exportation. This res...

Discrete event simulation model for purchasing of marked stands , timber harvesting and transportation

Quick reactions to customers’ needs, i.e. customized production, has been a common aim of the forest industries in Finland during the past decade. At first, it was thought to be suitable only for small and medium-sized industries, but nowadays large corporations have also developed their processes to make them increasingly customerorientated. Major development projects have been launched recent...
